“I’m going to make everything around me beautiful—that will be my life.” – Elsie De Wolfe
I have this thing with beauty.
When I think of the word, beauty, what comes to mind is symmetry and balance, refinement and style. There is beauty in composition; balance, design, layout, spacing, rhythm, distribution, harmony, placement, proportion. Beauty is having the power to attract, to draw interest–which is the exact purpose of visual merchandising. Good merchandising creates an inspiring and stimulating environment, that will motivate customers through their journey towards making a purchase.
As a Visual Merchandiser, I get to work within segment of retail that I absolutely love–luxury home goods. Whether it’s creating a tablescape, displaying the newest kitchen devices, or restyling living room and bedroom setups, being able to utilize my creative intuition and imagination is what fuels my passion for my role.
More about me:
After graduating with a B.S. in Marketing in 2006, I worked for a large real estate development firm in Orlando, FL. There, I created engaging and memorable written marking campaigns for their newest building projects.
In 2009 (after the housing market crash), the company scaled its workforce to the bare minimum, and my services were no longer needed (#laidoff). So, I started a freelance writing and editing career, working for various print and digital magazines.
I never thought I’d end up working in retail. But, in 2011 I was looking to make some extra holiday cash, and took a part time job. My hubby suggested I do it, since we were already frequent shoppers at that store, and having the discount couldn’t hurt. Shortly after starting, I was asked to lead in merchandising, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Currently, I’m responsible for visual campaign implementation for my brand’s store locations in Texas and several surrounding states. The store I work out of the most is in central Dallas–a new dual-concept, 10,000 sq. ft. flagship location, that features an expanded home-design studio.
